2017 BEC NEWS 1月号 < Winter Vacation >

Today, we talked about our winter vacations.

First of all, teachers said to students, “What did you do in your winter vacation?”

Students answered, I went to “Starbucks”, “Alpark”, “Yumetown”, “Ehime”, “Fukuoka”, and so on.  They seemed to go to a lot of places, but most students answered they visited a shrine, so teachers asked them what shrines they visited.

For example:

“Did you visit a shrine?” ― “Yes, I did.”

“Where did you go?” ― “I went to Fukuoka!”

“Do you go to Fukuoka every year?” ― “No.”

“Why did you go to Fukuoka?” ― “No reason.”

“Did you visit a shrine?” ― “Yes, I did.”

“Where did you go?” ― “I went to Ehime.”

“What shrine did you visit?” ― “The Yasaka shrine.”

Then, teachers and students enjoyed talking about their winter vacation!!

今日のBECでは、冬休みの出来事について話し合いました。まず始めに、ネイティブの先生は生徒に「冬休みにどこに行きましたか？」と尋ねました。生徒は、「スタバ」「アルパーク」「ゆめタウン」「愛媛県」「福岡県」と様々な場所に行ったようでした。その中でも、神社に参拝しに行った生徒が多かったようです。そのため、先生は生徒に「どこの神社に参拝しに行きましたか？」と尋ね、そこから冬休み中の話をしました。

「神社に参拝しに行きましたか？」　　　　　　「はい、行きました」

「どこの神社に行きましたか？」　　　　　　　「福岡の神社です」

「毎年、福岡に参拝しに行っているの？」　　　「いいえ」

「何で福岡に行ったの？」　　　　　　　　　　「特に理由はないです」

「神社に参拝しに行きましたか？」　　　　　　「はい、行きました」

「どこの神社に行きましたか？」　　　　　　　「愛媛の神社です」

「何ていう神社なの？」　　　　　　　　　　　「八坂神社です」

このようにして、互いに冬休みの出来事について話しました！

2017 BEC NEWS 2月号

Valentine’s day is coming soon, so we talked about Valentine’s day.

Teachers and students had a conversation like this:

“ What holiday is in February? ” ― “ …. ”

“ It’s fun.  It’s a holiday that not just Japanese celebrate. ”― “ …14? ”

                                 “ It’s February 14th. ”

                                  “ Valentine’s day! ”

                                        

“ What will people do on that day? ” ― “ People give chocolate! ”

First of all, they checked when and what Valentine’s day is.

Then, students learned differences between Valentine’s day of Western countries and Japan.

In Japan, only girls or women give some chocolates or snacks to their fathers, boyfriends, and friends.  In addition, there are chocolates called “Tomochoco”, “Girichoco”.

On the other hand, in Western countries, both girls and boys give chocolates to people who they like.  Therefore, there isn’t “White day”.

Students were looking forward to what they would make on Valentine’s day!!

２月のイベントとしてバレンタインデーがあります。

そのため、今日のBECではバレンタインデーについて学びました。

先生：　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　生徒：

「２月のイベントは？」　　　　　　　　　　　　　  「・・・」

「その日は楽しい日で、でも祝日ではなくて。」　　　 「１４日？」

     「２月１４日！！」

     「バレンタイン？」

「その通り！！」

「バレンタインデーには、みんな何をする？」　　　　「チョコレートをあげる！」

このように、バレンタインがいつなのか、何をする日なのか確かめたあと、日本と西洋の国とのバレンタインデーには違いがあることを学んでいきました。

日本は、女の子がバレンタインの日に家族・好きな人・友達にチョコレートなどのお菓子をあげます。また、友達にあげるチョコレートを「友チョコ」、「義理チョコ」と呼んだりします。

しかし、西洋の人々はバレンタインの日に、女の子だけでなく男の子も大切な人にチョコレートを渡します。男女互いに渡しあうため、西洋では「ホワイトデー」がないようです。

このように、日本と西洋とのバレンタインデーの違いを学びながら、生徒たちはバレンタインデーに何を作ろうかと楽しみにしていました！

2016 BEC NEWS 12月号 < Christmas >

Today, native speakers and students talked about “Christmas”.

Christmas is coming soon!!  So, first of all, they talked if they got ready for Christmas.  Then, they learned about Christmas.  For example, teachers said to students,

 “Do you have the Christmas tree?”― “No, I don’t.”

        “Yes, but I don’t set it.”

“Will you give someone the Christmas present?”― “Yes.”

“Who?”― “My pet.”

“What will you give your pet?”― “Food like gun for dog.”

“Will you give someone the Christmas present?”― “Yes.”

“Who?”― My friends.

“Then, here is the questions.  What is the Christmas?”― イエス・キリストが生まれた日？

“That’ right, but say that in English.”― “イエス・キリストwas born!”

Students knew Christmas is the day the Jesus Christ was born.  However, they didn’t know English-speakers say イエス・キリスト=“Jesus Christ ” in English.  So, they looked very surprised at this.

They were looking forward to coming Christmas!!

もうすぐクリスマスです！ということで、今日は、「クリスマス」について話しました。まず始めに、クリスマスに向けて何か準備しているか先生は尋ねます。例えば、

「クリスマスツリーの準備した？」―　「いいえ」

「はい、でもまだ立てていません」

「誰かにクリスマスプレゼントをあげる？」―　「はい」

「誰にあげるの？」―「飼っている犬！」

「何あげるの？」―「犬用のガム」

「誰かにクリスマスプレゼントをあげる？」―「はい」

「誰にあげるの？」―「友達」

しばらくすると、「クリスマスは何の日か知ってる？」と先生は改めて質問をします。

生徒は、「…イエス・キリストが生まれた日？」と答えました。

このように、クリスマスは何の日かについて掘り下げていきながら話し合いました。その話の途中、イエス・キリストのことを“ジーザス・クライスト”と英語では表現することも学んでとても驚いている様子でした。

生徒たちはクリスマスの話をして、「クリスマスプレゼント何もらえるかな～」など、もうすぐ来るクリスマスを待ち望んでいる様子でした！

2016 BEC NEWS 11月号 < Thanksgiving >

           Today, students learned “Thanksgiving”.  Usually, they only talked about a topic, but today they used crossword puzzles.

First of all, teachers asked students about each question:

“What’s the name of small ship the pilgrims sailed on?”― “I don’t know.”

“What’s the month of Thanksgiving in?”― “November.”

   “What’s the popular meat eaten on Thanksgiving?”― “Turkey.”           and so on.

         Some students knew answers, but most students didn’t know them.  So, teachers gave hints and students tried to fill in the blanks.  Then, students learned what “Thanksgiving” is.

In addition, one group studied about “Black Friday”.  First, when they heard the word “black”, most of the students thought it meant the color of black, but it was not true.  Actually, it means “surplus (黒字)”.  Then, they also learned what “Black Friday” is.

今日のＢＥＣでは、「サンクスギビングデー」について学びました。いつもとは違い、クロスワードパズルをしながら、「サンクスギビングデー」について学びました。

まず初めに、先生がいくつか質問をします。

「ピリグリムが乗っていた小さな船の名前は？」―「分かりません」

「サンクスギビングデーがあるのは何月？」―「１１月」

「サンクスギビングデーによく食べられる肉は何？」―「七面鳥」

生徒の何人かは「サンクスギビングデー」とは何の日のことか知っていましたが、ほとんどの生徒は知りませんでした。そのため、先生からヒントをもらい、クロスワードパズルを埋めながら、「サンクスギビングデー」に関する英単語やその歴史について学んでいきました。

あるグループではサンクスギビングに関係する「ブラックフライデー」という日についても学びました。「ブラック」という単語を聞くと、「黒色」という意味だと思った生徒が多いようでしたが、「ブラックフライデー」のブラックは「黒字」を意味するということを教わりながら、「ブラックフライデー」についての理解も深めていきました。

2016 BEC NEWS 10月号 < 10/21 Halloween >

Halloween is coming soon!!

So, students talked about Halloween.

First, native speakers asked them about Halloween:

"When is Halloween?"    

"Where did Halloween start?"

"Have you ever gone Trick or Treating?"

then  students answered,

"It's October 30th?"   "October 31st!! "

"I don't know..."

"Yes!"  "No."

Then, teachers taught what Halloween was and students understood it deeply.

They tried to understand what English-speakers said and tell what students thought in English.

They were　still afraid of speaking English and looked nervous, but I hope they enjoy communicating in English.

もうすぐハロウィンです！！

そこで、今回のＢＥＣではハロウィンについて話すことになりました。

まず始めに、

「ハロウィンはいつか？」

「ハロウィンはどこが起源か？」

「『トリック　オア　トリート』をやってみたことがあるか？」など、ネイティブが質問しました。

それに対して生徒たちは
「１０月３０日？」「１０月３１日！！」

「分かりません」

「あります」「ないです」と、応答は様々。

そこから、ハロウィンとは何の行事なのかについて、ネイティブから学び理解を深めていきました。

生徒は、ネイティブが話していることを一生懸命聞き取ろうとし、英語で自分の意見を伝えようと頑張っていました。まだ、英語を話すのに緊張している様子ですが、これからの彼女たちの成長に期待が高まります！
